ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday announced “Operation Victory” against Israel’s Tel-Nof and Nevatim airbases, as the two sides have resumed trading salvoes, despite a ceasefire and ongoing Tehran-Washington talks to end the war.
Iran on Sunday night announced that it launched strikes against Israel in retaliation for recent Israeli strikes on Lebanon, prompting retaliatory strikes from Israel on central and western Iran early Monday.
On Monday, the IRGC said its forces targeted “important centers of the strategic airbases of Nevatim and Tel-Nof.”
“This operation was carried out in response to the child-killing Zionist regime's [Israel] missile aggression against several radar sites in three parts of the country,” the IRGC said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said its force carried out renewed attacks against several targets at a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, southwestern Iran.
The Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex evacuated its day shift staff following what it said were two Israeli strikes which struck the Karun Petrochemical Company, Iranian state media said, with no casualties reported.
The attacks come as a ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran has been in place since April. Israel, however, has continued its operations targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, while Tehran has insisted that any ceasefire between the adversaries must also include its Lebanese allies.
Before the Israeli strikes on Iran on Monday, US President Donald Trump repeatedly stated that he does not want Israel to respond to the Iranian attacks, claiming that the escalation should not prevent a deal with Iran.
"What I would suggest to Iran: You've shot your missiles, that's enough. Get back to the table and make a deal," Trump told Fox News in a separate statement.
The US-Israel war with Iran started on February 28, with Monday marking the 100th day. The US and Israel killed several top Iranian commanders including its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
