ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Israeli military said Monday it will stop attacking Iran at the request of US President Donald Trump, Israeli media reported, adding however that attacks on Lebanon will continue with “full force” in the coming days.
“At Trump's request - Israel is stopping the attacks in Iran,” Israel’s Channel 12 reported on Monday, citing a senior Israeli official.
Shortly before the Israeli announcement, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced the suspension of its operations targeting Israel, though warning that “much more severe and crushing measures will be on the way” if the aggressions continue, including in southern Lebanon.
The announcements mark the end of an overnight exchange of fire between the two countries, after Iran attacked Israel on Sunday, in retaliation for recent Israeli strikes on Lebanon.
Following the Iranian strikes, US President Donald Trump urged the Israeli side not to respond to the offensive, encouraging both sides to return to the negotiating table.
Israel carried out strikes on central and western Iran early Monday in response to the Iranian attacks, despite Trump’s request.
The Israeli official further noted that attacks in southern Lebanon will “continue in the coming days with full force,” threatening to target the southern predominantly Shiite suburb of Dahieh in Beirut if attacks continued toward its settlements.
In a statement later in the day, also carried by Channel 12, the Israeli army said that projectiles launched toward its forces resulted in no casualties in the Israeli settlements, “so we will not attack Dahieh.”
Iranian authorities have continuously asserted that a potential peace deal to end the war must entail halt of all attacks on southern Lebanon, a demand firmly rejected by the Israeli government, which continues its military operations in the area.
On Wednesday, Israel and Lebanon agreed on a “complete cessation” of hostilities and the withdrawal of Hezbollah from southern Lebanon after a US-mediated negotiating process that Hezbollah repeatedly criticized.
