US President Donald Trump said Sunday that an Israeli strike on Beirut should not have happened, warning that further attacks could jeopardize efforts to secure a peace deal with Iran.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US President Donald Trump said Sunday that an Israeli attack on Beirut earlier in the day “should not have happened, particularly on a special day” when a deal with Iran is “so close,”  urging all sides to avoid further escalation.

“There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel,” Trump said on Truth Social.

Israel attacked Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday, killing at least three people and wounding six others, according to Lebanese state media. The Israeli foreign ministry said Hezbollah had carried out an “unprovoked” attack against Israeli territory on earlier on Sunday morning.

Trump stressed Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, arguing however that the attack it responded to was a “very small and meaningless” one, and “nobody was hurt, injured or killed.”

The Israeli army said in an X post after Trump’s Truth Social statement that the impacts of “several aerial targets” were identified in Israeli territory, and that “no injuries were reported,” though the incident remains “under review.”

The strike came as Washington and Tehran are on the brink of signing a deal to end the war. On Saturday, Trump said the agreement was “scheduled to be signed” on Sunday.

He said the incident should not disrupt ongoing efforts to reach a deal with Iran, describing the negotiations as being close to completion.

“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump wrote.

“This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace – Let’s not blow it!” Trump said.

Following the attack, Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the strikes had “once again shown that America either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so.”

He added that “if you lack the will and ability to fulfill your commitments, speaking of continuing the path is not possible.”

A diplomat involved in the talks also told Fox News that the strike risked undermining ongoing negotiations, describing it as “a clear attempt by Israel to sabotage the President’s deal and drag the United States back into war.”
