ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Friday that US forces conducted strikes against Iran in response to what it described as an Iranian attack on a commercial ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz the day prior.
“US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted strikes against Iran, June 26, as a powerful response to yesterday’s attack on a commercial ship that was transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
According to CENTCOM, “US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites after Iran hit M/V Ever Lovely on June 25 with a one-way attack drone.”
The statement said the Singapore-flagged cargo ship “was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time of Iran’s attack.”
“The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire,” CENTCOM said. “Furthermore, Iran’s dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor.”
“The US military remains present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect.”
Iranian semi-official media reported that an explosion was heard at the Taheroi pier in Sirik, located in the country's south, at 3:15 pm local time on Friday.
A military source said the cause of the explosion was a projectile that struck the pier, according to Mehr News Agency.
The source added that “about 5 hours ago, several warning shots were fired from Sirik city at violating vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.”
The source also said “two warning missiles were fired from near Kirpan towards the Strait of Hormuz a few hours ago,” according to the report.
Earlier on Friday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of attacking commercial shipping in the waterway, saying, “Iran shot at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships in the Strait of Hormuz” and calling it “a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”
The Wall Street Journal also reported that a Singapore-flagged vessel was attacked by the IRGC while transiting the Strait, while the UK Maritime Trade Operations center said the ship’s bridge was damaged but no casualties were reported.
Mere minutes before the US strikes were announced, Trump responded "you'll find out" if Iran would face consequences for the alleged incident in the strategic waterway.
