ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least two Iranian security personnel were killed and several others injured in an attack in Iran's Kurdistan province on Saturday, state media reported, days after the armed wing of a Kurdish opposition party issued a warning to the Islamic Republic.
The attack targeted the Sabdalu checkpoint in Baneh early Saturday, killing two members of Iran’s police command (Faraja) and injuring four others, including two Faraja members, according to Iranian state media.
Kurdistan province’s police commander ordered an investigation to identify those responsible for the attack and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, state media added.
The attack came two days after the Eastern Kurdistan Units (YRK), the armed wing of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), issued a warning statement saying it would respond to attacks in Kurdish-populated western Iran (Rojhelat).
YRK accused the Iranian military of striking villages around Baneh with three suicide drones, saying the attacks caused no casualties among its fighters but inflicted “significant damage” on civilian land and property.
“We do not accept attacks on our country in any way. If they are repeated, we will definitely give the necessary response,” the statement read.
Iran frequently carries out strikes in Kurdish-majority western Iran (Rojhelat), saying it targets "separatist" and anti-state elements. Iranian Kurdish opposition groups accuse Tehran of carrying out indiscriminate attacks that have damaged civilian property and the environment.
PJAK is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and seeks to topple the Iranian government and secure Kurdish self-determination.
