ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran and the United States exchanged heavy fire for a second night in a row overnight into Thursday, with Tehran targeting Bahrain and Kuwait and warning of further attacks on regional US military bases.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said early Thursday that its forces have “completed an additional round of strikes against Iran to further degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz.”
The US forces struck “approximately 90 Iranian military targets,” including air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline, CENTCOM said.
At least three people were killed as a result of US bombardment in western Iran's Khuzestan province, according to Iranian state media. The Iranian health ministry on Thursday announced that a total of 14 people were killed and 78 wounded as a result of American strikes on July 8 and 9.
"When they hit, we hit back much harder," said US President Donald Trump regarding the exchanges. "They called a little while ago. They want to make a deal so badly - I just don't know if they're worthy of making a deal. I don't know that they're going to honor the deal."
The conflict between the US and Iran reescalated in earnest in the early hours of Wednesday, when they exchanged strikes targeting ports in southern Iran and US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, with both Washington and Tehran accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.
The developments followed Tehran allegedly targeting US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait soon after overnight US strikes.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that it targeted what it described as key US facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, including Arifjan and Ali al-Salem in Kuwait, and Jufair and Sheikh Isa in Bahrain, “in joint missile and drone operations,” about an hour after the US attacks.
The IRGC further warned the US that if “the aggression is repeated, our crushing responses will be expanded to other American bases in the region.”
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, in a Thursday X post, said that "America still hasn’t learned that bullying and breaking promises are no longer cost-free."
"Let me put it plainly: if you strike, you’ll get hit," Tehran's chief negotiator continued. "Don’t flail around pointlessly, or you’ll sink even deeper."
Throughout the February war, Iran and its proxy groups targeted more than 15 regional countries, citing the presence of US military bases as justification for the attacks.
Trump said Wednesday that "as far as I'm concerned, it's over" when asked whether the June 17 ceasefire he announced between the United States and Iran remained in effect despite the renewed exchanges.
Trump said the planned overnight strikes were a continuation of US retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, referring to Iran's Tuesday attack on a Saudi- and Qatari-flagged oil tanker transiting the waterway.
Tehran has repeatedly maintained that vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz must use shipping lanes approved by Iranian authorities and provide prior notification before passing through the strategic waterway.
