In a phone call with Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubaker, the Kurdish premier expressed concern over the recent fire incidents in the province.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday called on authorities in Sulaimani to tighten safeguards following recent fires in the province, affirming the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) full support toward that end.

A large blaze erupted at a fuel storage facility in Sulaimani’s Tanjaro area late Monday, resulting in at least 41 injuries.

Another fire broke out near the Sulaimani governor’s office on Tuesday evening, but was controlled after an hour with no reported injuries. Although the exact cause is unknown, the fire reportedly started during a fuel delivery from a tanker to the building's storage tank.

In a phone call with Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubaker, the Kurdish premier expressed concern over the recent fire incidents in the province.

Barzani “directed the governor and officials of the city to tighten safeguards to protect the lives and properties of citizens, reiterating the KRG’s full aid and support in that regard,” according to a statement from his office.

“The prime minister also wished a speedy recovery for the citizens that have been injured in these incidents,” the statement added.

Fires are common in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, particularly during the summer and amid lax safety standards.
