The Global Coalition against ISIS has committed a "heinous crime" and "blatant aggression" by targeting Iraqi forces, Iraq’s top military spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Coalition fighter jets targeted facilities belonging to Iraqi security agencies in northern Babil province’s Jurf al-Sakhr on Tuesday.
The attack resulted in the deaths of four members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and injuries to others. The Iraqi government condemned the strike as "reckless and irresponsible."
In a statement Yehia Rasool warned that such actions could significantly disrupt joint efforts against ISIS and could potentially escalate conflicts in Iraq and the wider region.
He emphasized that the Global Coalition operates under a specific mandate, and the recent attack represents a serious violation of that mandate.
The Iraqi government has pledged to pursue legal and diplomatic measures to protect its sovereignty, seek justice for the victims, and address the violations by the Global Coalition.
The PMF reported that their 47th Brigade in Jurf al-Sakhr, northern Babil, was hit by an airstrike of unknown origin.
They condemned the attack, attributing it to American forces and linking it to broader regional tensions, including simultaneous Israeli airstrikes on Beirut.
The PMF's statement accused the US of ongoing hostility towards their forces and called on the Iraqi government to take appropriate measures in response.
According to AFP, a US defense official described the airstrike on Tuesday as an act of "self-defense."
"The US forces in Iraq carried out a defensive airstrike in Babil Province targeting fighters who were attempting to launch offensive drones,” the official said.
