Iraq issued death sentences to 13 individuals involved in drug trafficking, while 17 others have been sentenced to life imprisonment, the General Directorate of Narcotics Control and Psychotropic Substances announced on Thursday.

The arrests come as Iraq has increased its efforts, in collaboration with neighboring countries, to combat the increasing use and trade of narcotics in the country.

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking this year, busting 230 networks, including 27 international ones. 

This effort follows last year’s arrest of over 19,000 individuals, with more than 150 international traffickers among them. In total, the ministry has seized about two tons of drugs, primarily Captagon from Syria and crystal meth from Afghanistan via Iran.

Interior Ministry spokesman Miqdad Miri highlighted the extensive work and international cooperation involved, likening the fight against drugs to the battle against terrorism.

He emphasized that the ministry is vigilant against any attempts to smuggle drugs, which have become a major crime driver in Iraq.

Iraq, with its extensive borders with Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, has evolved from a transit route to a significant drug consumption market. 

The Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, are the main destinations for smuggled Captagon. 

In recent months, the ministry has arrested thousands and issued harsh sentences, including 70 death penalties for convicted drug criminals. 

These measures are part of Iraq’s broader strategy to eradicate the drug trade, which experts estimate to be worth billions of dollars.
