Iraqi security forces conducted an operation in Diwaniyah province on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a major drug trafficker and the injury of another, who remains on the run. The operation, also led to the moderate injury of the province’s Director of Drug Affairs.

Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced Wednesday that a significant anti-drug operation in Diwaniyah province resulted in the death of one major drug dealer and injuries to another.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of the morning, also led to the moderate injury of the province’s Director of Drug Affairs.

According to the Ministry's statement, the operation was launched at 3:45 AM following precise intelligence that tracked the movements of the two drug dealers.

Security forces set up an ambush in the Al-Hamza Al-Sharqi area, where they engaged in a firefight with the suspects.

The Ministry confirmed that the Director of Drug Affairs in Diwaniyah was moderately injured during the exchange of gunfire and was subsequently transported to a hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.

The search for the second suspect continues as authorities in Diwaniyah remain on high alert.

The drug crisis has emerged as one of Iraq's most pressing and dangerous challenges, particularly in the wake of the declining threat from terrorism and Islamic State (ISIS).

As the focus shifts from counterterrorism efforts, the Iraqi government now faces an escalating battle against drug trafficking and abuse.

Iraqi security forces, almost daily, report the dismantling of drug networks and the arrest of individuals involved in drug-related activities across various provinces.
