Investigations into a spate of drone attacks in the Kurdistan Region by a joint Erbil-Baghdad technical committee are ongoing.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Wednesday met with the Iraqi Ministerial National Security Council. During the meeting, a recent wave of drone attacks on oil facilities, predominantly falling under the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) jurisdiction, was reviewed.

“During the meeting, the work of the specialized committees investigating the attacks on oil facilities, vital areas, and Iraqi military equipment, including radars, as well as the recent attack on an agricultural department near Karkh, Baghdad, was reviewed” read a statement attributed to Sudani’s spokesperson, Sabah al-Numan.

The meeting also saw discussions regarding the recent deadly mall fire in Karkh that killed over 60 people, in addition to the overall security situation in the country as well as border security, according to the statement.

The Kurdistan Region's energy infrastructure sites have been attacked by myriad drone strikes in recent weeks, coinciding with the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after a 12-day military conflict. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The latest episode occurred on Wednesday morning with a suicide drone falling in Erbil’s Makhmour district without exploding.

Major General Abdul Khaliq Talat, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representative in the Joint Operations Command, said in an interview with The New Region that armed groups carried out more than 20 drone attacks recently, adding that the drone campaign began with attacks on radar systems in Baghdad and Anbar before targeting areas in Kurdistan.

Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji visited Erbil on Monday with a high-level security delegation as part of an investigation into the attacks, where he held a “high-level security meeting” with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and its security services.

During a joint press conference with Araji, KRG Interior Minister Reber Ahmed announced that a joint Erbil-Baghdad technical committee will be formed to investigate the remains of the drones and identify their origin and the parties responsible.
