Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani chaired the inaugural meeting of the Higher Committee for Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing AI's crucial role in advancing government reforms and economic diversification.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing the government's reform agenda during the first meeting of the Higher Committee for Artificial Intelligence on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed the Iraqi National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, focusing on key projects and applications that the government aims to support.

Discussions centered on the need for government ministries and institutions to incorporate AI-related projects and legislation.

This includes integrating AI concepts into educational curricula, establishing Iraq’s first AI-driven educational platform, and implementing smart applications in developmental areas.

Sudani highlighted the government's digital transformation efforts, stressing that this initiative is a priority in its broader economic reform plans.

“Adopting AI is essential for supporting our steps toward economic reform and leveraging the technological revolution across various sectors,” he said.

The prime minister noted that Iraq has been ahead of its regional counterparts in introducing AI studies into academic programs at Iraqi universities.

He also called for the adoption of information security legislation and ethical oversight in technology, particularly in light of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism, which often exploits technology and cyberspace for criminal activities.

Sudani further pointed to the potential of AI in diversifying Iraq’s economy, especially in non-oil sectors. He directed government efforts to tap into the talents of young Iraqis, aiming to shield them from exploitation by criminal gangs and extremist groups.

PM Sudani underscored the importance of a youth training program that will extend to all provinces through robot and AI clubs, which are affiliated with the Higher Youth Council.
