Hours after a statement from the Iraqi judiciary denying circulating information on a wiretapping network case, the Iraqi government reaffirmed its adherence to the law and respect for judicial decisions, refuting “misleading campaigns that aim to obstruct its work in various fields.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iraqi government emphasizes on adhering to the law and respecting judicial decisions, government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi said on Sunday, refuting “misleading campaigns that aim to obstruct its work in various fields.”

Awadi’s statement read that the government “is following up on misleading campaigns that aim to obstruct its work in various fields, including inaccurate information that contains innuendo, and some of which included direct accusations against the government regarding issues currently under consideration by the judiciary.”

The Iraqi government’s spokesperson added that their government continues emphasizing on adherence to the law and respecting judicial decisions.

“The government stresses the need to continue fighting corruption and all forms of infringement of the law, in continuous and close cooperation with the judicial and legislative authorities,” he said.

The statement from the government comes hours after a statement from the judiciary’s media department said that it “confirms the inaccuracy of the information circulating on some social media sites regarding the investigation of what is known as the case of (Mohammad Juhi Network).”

On August 19, Iraqi MP Mustafa Sanad said that a network functioning inside the government building where the prime minister’s office is located were arrested for "impersonating and eavesdropping on the phones of Iraqi politicians and MPs.”

According to Sanad, “the network was practicing several unclean acts, including wiretapping the phones of a number of MPs and politicians.”

Seven suspects have been arrested so far, the most prominent of whom is Mohammed Juhi, the assistant director of the administrative department in the Prime Minister's Office.

A familiar source told The New Region that Juhi was arrested “by following a link to one of the pages associated with him personally.

“Following the link led the National Security personnels directly to his home inside the Green Zone, where he was arrested,” he said

A senior official from Sudani’s office previously told The New Region that the network was formed during the government of former Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
