ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Baghdad Operations Command in a statement on Tuesday described an overnight explosion in Baghdad which killed two individuals and wounded three others near a security checkpoint as a ‘criminal act’ and not terror-related.
“At 23:30 pm on Monday evening, an explosive device placed inside a gift box went off. It was taken through a delivery service via a tuk-tuk to a citizen who had requested it and was waiting for it near a checkpoint in the Salamiyat area within the Abu Ghraib district, west of Baghdad,” the statement read.
It added that "when the motorcycle arrived at the specified location and the order was delivered, it exploded, which led to the death of the motorcycle driver and the injury of the citizen who was waiting for him, and the martyrdom of an Iraqi army soldier and the injury of another person."
Shortly after the incident, relevant authorities launched a probe into the incident to identify the perpetrators, the statement detailed, noting further details will be made available soon.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the injured targeted individual at a hospital in Baghdad saying soon after the incident happened, he received a phone call from the same number that he had called to order food wondering whether or not he was alive.
