A US embassy spokesperson confirmed no casualties following an attack on the US Diplomatic Services Compound in Baghdad late Tuesday. The embassy is assessing the damage and investigating the cause of the attack.

DUBAI, UAE - The US Diplomatic Services Compound in Baghdad was attacked late Tuesday, but no casualties were reported, a US embassy spokesperson said Wednesday.

The embassy is assessing the damage and the cause of the attack, with further information to be provided after the investigation is completed according to Reuters.

At approximately 11 pm local time, an explosion was heard inside Baghdad International Airport, according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell. The explosion occurred in the section of the airport used by Global Coalition advisors.

Iraqi security forces were unable to determine the nature or cause of the explosion at the time, and no group has claimed responsibility.

The Iraqi Security Media Cell noted that security and intelligence units are actively working to uncover more details, and facts will be released once the situation is fully understood. Civilian air traffic continues as normal, with no disruption to flights.

Two Katyusha rockets were fired during the incident—one hitting the counterterrorism fence and the other landing inside the Global Coalition base, which is led by the US, according to a senior Iraqi security official who spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The attack has drawn attention due to its timing, coinciding with a high-profile visit by the Iranian president to Baghdad.

Jaafar Al-Husseini, spokesperson for Kataib Hezbollah, suggested in a post on “X” that the attack was carried out by “suspicious hands” aiming to disrupt the diplomatic visit. Husseini also urged Iraq’s security services to investigate and reveal those responsible for the incident.
