ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The United States on Tuesday condemned Iran’s ballistic missile attack and reiterated its support for Israel, stressing that there will be “severe consequences” for Tehran’s “significant escalation.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday evening launched hundreds of ballistic missiles targeting locations in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and southern Israel, in retaliation for the death of Iranian and Axis of Resistance leaders.

"The attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective,” US President Joe Biden told reporters at the White House.

"Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully, fully supportive of Israel."

US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris also pledged her “unwavering” commitment Israel’s security and supporting its ability to “defend itself” following the Iranian attack.

Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder condemned Iran’s “reckless” attack on Israel, noting that “the majority” of the missiles were intercepted by the Israeli defense system with the support of a global coalition, led by the US.

The IRGC claimed that 90 percent of the missiles successfully hit their targets.

No US personnel were injured or harmed in the Iranian attack, Ryder said, adding that Washington will respond if American personnel and interests were to be targeted by Iran or its allies.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan labeled the Iranian attack “a significant event,” adding that Washington will work with Israel on formulating a response.

“We have made clear that there will be consequences, severe consequences, for this attack, and we will work with Israel to make that the case,” Sullivan told reporters.

Israeli top officials warned Iran to expect “severe consequences.”

“Iran made a big mistake tonight, and it will pay the price for it,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling the Iranian attack a “failure”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry in a statement warned against "any third party entry" and called on the UN Security Council to take "immediate and meaningful action" to prevent further threats to regional and international peace and security

The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the Iranian attack and recent escalations in the Middle East on Wednesday.

The attack comes months after Iran vowed to retaliate for the killing of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in a strike in Tehran, which it blamed on Israel. The threats of an Iranian retaliation increased in recet days following the killing of Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah, in an Israeli strike in Beirut.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's resort to the right of legitimate defense, after a prolonged period of restraint, reflects Iran's responsible approach to regional and international peace and security," read the statement from the Iranian foreign ministry.
