DUBAI, UAE - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation in Damascus on Saturday, where both leaders underscored the strategic importance of the alliance between Syria and Iran, particularly in confronting regional threats.
During the meeting, Assad highlighted the key role of Syrian-Iranian relations in addressing ongoing challenges, with particular focus on Israel’s continued occupation of Arab territories and its daily acts of violence against civilians in Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria.
Assad described resistance to occupation, aggression, and mass killings as a “legitimate right,” firmly rooted in public support. He praised Iran’s recent response to Israeli attacks in the region, stating it had "sent a clear message that the axis of resistance is capable of deterring Israel and undermining its plans."
“The only solution for Israel is to cease its crimes of killing innocent civilians and return legitimate rights to their rightful owners,” Assad declared.
The discussion also focused on efforts to halt Israeli aggression in Lebanon, and the need for coordinated support to assist the Lebanese people, many of whom have been forced to flee due to ongoing violence. Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s confidence in the strength of the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine to confront Israeli military operations.
Earlier in the day, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali also met with Araghchi to review regional developments amid Israeli attacks on Lebanese and Palestinian civilians.
Talks centered on providing relief aid and securing resources for displaced Lebanese arriving in Syria, as well as strengthening economic ties between Syria and Iran. Both sides emphasized the importance of advancing joint projects and implementing existing bilateral agreements.
The leaders stressed the need for continued efforts at all levels to stop Israeli aggression in Lebanon and coordinated their efforts to provide for the displaced Lebanese, ensuring that their basic needs are met.
Jalali affirmed that “under the direction of President Assad, the Syrian government has provided all possible assistance to the displaced Lebanese, despite Syria’s own economic challenges.” He also expressed gratitude to Iran for its ongoing support, both for those affected by the violence and for its longstanding solidarity with the Syrian people.
Both Syria and Iran reiterated their commitment to their strategic relationship.
Araghchi highlighted the importance of this collaboration, particularly in navigating the current regional circumstances. He reaffirmed Iran’s continued support for Syria and emphasized the significance of the upcoming joint government committee meetings as critical for advancing cooperation.
Later, during a press conference at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, Araghchi described his visit to Syria as “very good and highly successful,” following his earlier trip to Beirut.
