ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region’s top leaders on Saturday commemorated the 21st anniversary of the Erbil bombings, stressing the need for Kurdish unity in the face of adversity.

On February 1, 2004, the offices of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Erbil were targeted by a double suicide attack, in which 103 people were killed and over 200 others were wounded.

The attacks coincided with the first day of the Islamic Eid al-Adha.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday attended a ceremony at Erbil’s Martyrs' Monument, commemorating the anniversary of the deadly terror attack. The ceremony was also attended by top KDP and PUK officials, as well as representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in Erbil.

“The February 1st bombings were an attack on all of Kurdistan,” wrote the Kurdish premier on X.

“Today, we honor the martyrs and reaffirm the importance of unity in the face of adversity and tyranny,” he added.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also honored the memory of the victims, referring to them as “a symbol of the shared bloodshed of all Kurdistanis.”

“The best way to show loyalty to the souls of the martyrs and the right way to fight terrorists, is through unity. Only then can we protect our achievements and rights and achieve our goals,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region president.
