ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The ruling Iraqi Coordination Framework on Monday stressed the need to hold legislative elections on time, emphasizing that no party should be allowed to postpone them.
In a regular meeting, held in head of the State of Law Coalition and former Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki's house, the Coordination Framework discussed "the latest political and security developments in Iraq, the region, and the world."
The Shiite umbrella bloc urged the government to cultivate "an electoral environment, provide electoral security requirements, and provide support to the Independent High Electoral Commission to ensure the success of the process and ensure its integrity," read a statement by the Coordination Framework.
Parliamentary elections to establish the sixth term of the Iraqi legislature are set to be held later this year, with more than 29 million people estimated to be eligible for participation.
The Framework called on citizens "not to neglect their constitutional right to vote for qualified candidates."
Iraq’s elections body announced in late March that they will begin the voter registry process, which was set to last one month.
