ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) delegations met on Tuesday in Erbil, a PUK official told The New Region, adding that the two sides were set to discuss posts and party shares in the tenth cabinet of the Kurdistan Region.
The KDP delegation is headed by politburo member Hoshyar Zebari, while Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani leads the PUK contingent. The meeting is being held in the KDP’s politburo office in Erbil.
The meeting comes days after KDP leader Masoud Barzani urged the two parties’ negotiating teams and delegates to “speed up” the formation of the government, nearly six months after the parliamentary elections were held.
Tuesday’s meeting is said to be the last meeting between the two sides, during which they will finalize their agreements.
The KDP and PUK emerged as the main parties from the October 20 parliamentary elections, gaining 39 and 23 seats respectively. The Kurdistan Region’s newly elected members of parliament were sworn in early December, officially commencing their legislative duties.
Ever since, the two parties have held numerous meetings at the leadership and technical levels. Both sides have repeatedly described their meetings as positive.
The KDP and PUK held their last meeting on March 18, during which they said they had reached a “final draft” outlining the formation of the cabinet.
