An official from the KRG told The New Region that the PKK was behind both attacks.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - For the second day in a row, a drone rigged with explosives targeted a Peshmerga base in Duhok province’s Deraluk subdistrict on Tuesday, injuring two personnel, a government official confirmed to The New Region, blaming the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The attack occurred at around 5:30 AM, Masoud Tahir, head of Amedi district’s health department, told The New Region, adding one of the wounded has sustained critical injuries.

In Monday's similar attack, three Peshmerga were wounded. An official from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) told The New Region that the PKK was behind both attacks.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) accused “a terrorist group” for the attacks in which five personnel were injured.

“Today, and yesterday, a terrorist group targeted Peshmerga bases in two drone attacks in Duhok province, wounding five Peshmerga as a result. The injured are in good condition, and the Peshmerga are ready to repel any plots and attacks by the enemies with a will of steel," read the statement.

Designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara, the PKK uses mountainous areas of the Kurdistan Region as shelter and often engages in direct armed conflict with Turkey. The group and its proxies have also engaged in clashes with the Peshmerga and Iraqi armed forces in the past.

The attack comes amid peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK since October. In late February, PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan called on the group to disarm and transition to a dialogue-based discourse with Turkey as opposed to military struggle.

The negotiations aim to bring to an end the conflict between the two sides that has spanned decades and claimed tens of thousands of lives.
