Iraqi government signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to add 14,000 megawatts to the national power grid and maintain two key power plants.

DUBAI, UAE - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Thursday oversaw the signing of an energy cooperation agreement and two maintenance contracts between Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and Germany’s Siemens Energy.

The agreements include a memorandum of understanding to add 14,000 megawatts to Iraq’s national power grid as part of the third phase of a broader energy cooperation plan.

Officials say the initiative is aimed at bolstering the country’s electricity infrastructure and improving nationwide energy services.

The maintenance contracts cover two key power stations. The first is a long-term maintenance deal for the Dibis Gas Power Plant, which includes two generating units with a combined capacity of 340 megawatts.

The second is a five-year contract for the Mussaib Thermal Power Plant, which will maintain units generating 750 megawatts, add 150 megawatts in new capacity, and ensure safe operation and development of the facility.

While meeting with Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch, Sudani highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation between Iraq and Germany’s government, describing Siemens as a vital partner in Iraq’s energy sector development.

He underscored his government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with international firms in maintenance, production, distribution and transmission of electricity.

Bruch reiterated Siemens’ interest in expanding its work in Iraq and supporting the Ministry of Electricity through large-scale strategic projects. He noted that Siemens completed maintenance on all units in Iraq’s power stations ahead of schedule this year.

The signing ceremony was also attended by the German ambassador to Iraq.
