Iraqi MP Haitham al-Zarkani said the Arab-Islamic summit in Doha will not produce practical steps against Israel, describing expected outcomes as limited to “media statements and traditional positions.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraqi lawmaker Haitham al-Zarkani said Monday that the Arab-Islamic summit taking place in Doha is unlikely to produce any meaningful measures against Israel, despite heightened expectations after the latest Israeli attack on Qatar.

Israel last week conducted airstrikes against Hamas officials in Doha in an unprecedented attack on the Palestinian militant group's leadership in the Qatari capital, ushering in a wave of regional and international condemnations.

A summit in Doha on Monday convenes leaders and officials from across the Arab and Muslim world to discuss the recent attack. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein are attending on behalf of Iraq.

Zarkani told The New Region the most the summit can be expected to deliver are “media statements and traditional positions, similar to most previous Arab-Islamic summits.”

He added that Arab and Muslim publics have grown increasingly skeptical of such gatherings, which often end with non-binding resolutions. “This reflects a state of weakness and division within the Arab and Islamic system,” he added.

Zarkani said people are waiting for concrete steps such as economic and political boycotts or the use of diplomatic and legal pressure against Israel. Relying only on public statements, he warned, risks undermining credibility before Arab, Islamic, and international audiences.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, on Saturday warned Islamic governments against “speeches without practical results” at the upcoming summit, calling for more concrete measures against Israel, including the formation of a “joint operations room.”
