ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran on Wednesday slammed the US for marking the third anniversary of Mahsa (Jina) Amini’s death, and accused Washington of "criminal intervention in Iran's internal affairs."
"Iran considers the statement of the US Department of State, full of hypocrisy, deceit and insolence, on the pretext of the anniversary of the September unrest in 2022, as a clear example of America's belligerent and criminal intervention in Iran's internal affairs and condemns it," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement.
The Iranian foreign ministry further accused the US of conspiring with Tehran's rivals, such as during the Iraq-Iran War when former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein "use[d] chemical weapons against Iranian children," and "attacking nuclear facilities and killing Iranian scientists," during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel, in addition to further sanctioning the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, The US commemorated the death of Jina Amini, who died in custody in September 2022, after she was arrested by Iran’s morality police over indecent attire.
“Mahsa’s name will never be forgotten. Her murder, along with so many others, is a damning indictment of the Islamic Republic’s crimes against humanity. The United States will continue to work with allies and partners around the world to ensure that the regime’s atrocities are met with accountability, justice, and resolve,” it said.
The US further accused the Islamic Republic of ruling through “torture and execution, silencing dissent with public executions and beatings,” while adding that Tehran “pours money into exporting terror, it neglects its own people,” the statement added.
The US statement added that Washington stands with the people of Iran and will continue to apply maximum pressure on the country to hold it accountable.
Amini, a young Kurdish woman, died in September 2022, sparking one of Iran’s largest nationwide uprisings, known as the "Woman, Life, Freedom" (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement.
Hundreds of people have been arrested and many sentenced to death in recent years across Iran for participating in the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protest.
Amnesty International reported earlier in September that since the widespread protests in 2022, authorities have used the death penalty as "a tool of oppression," with over 800 people having been executed in 2025 alone.
