Eyewitnesses told The New Region that the two alleged assailants chanted "Allahu Akbar" while shooting at a police station in Sulaimani's Chwarchra.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Sulaimani's local security forces (Asayish) announced Tuesday the arrest of two suspects accused of shooting at a police station in Sulaimani's Chwarchra.

According to an Asayish statement, the suspects confessed to holding extremist ideologies. Eyewitnesses told The New Region that the pair chanted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack. After a brief clash, they were promptly arrested by Sulaimani Police in a joint operation with Asayish operatives.

"A police officer was injured in the event," Asayish said. The incident damaged the police building and broke several windows, according to The New Region's reporter, who added that the assailants had covered their faces while carrying out the offense.

The New Region attempted to contact Sulaimani Police spokesperson Sarkawt Ahmed to obtain additional details of the incident, but he was unavailable for comment.

Security forces have arrested several alleged members of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Sulaimani in recent times, including two suspected of ISIS affiliation whose arrests were announced by Sulaimani Asayish late Sunday.

Iraqi security forces arrested over 500 terror suspects in 2024, according to data from the Iraqi National Security Service.

Despite being territorially defeated in 2017, ISIS militants continue to pose a security threat in Iraq through sporadic hit-and-run operations and attacks on remote areas. Iraqi forces, in cooperation with Kurdish forces, have intensified their efforts to eliminate these remnants.
