Fidan's last visit to the Iraqi capital was in January, where he met with top officials to discuss bilateral relations and current regional developments.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to arrive in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Sunday to discuss regional security and water projects, an informed source told The New Region.

Fidan will be received by his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein and is set to meet with other top officials, with the discussions revolving around security issues, water projects, and other topics, the source added.

Fidan and Hussein met earlier in October in Akara, where the Iraqi top diplomat said they reached an understanding with Turkey to develop solutions for Iraq’s water crisis, and discussed the resumption of the Kurdistan Region's oil exports through the Ceyhan pipeline.

Fidan welcomed the resumption of oil exports through the Ceyhan pipeline and said Ankara seeks to continue cooperation with Iraq on oil under a new agreement.

Exports of the Kurdistan Region’s oil resumed in late September after an over two-year halt, which came about after Ankara lost a case against Iraq in March 2023 in a Paris-based arbitration court.

Iraq is also experiencing a worsening water crisis, caused by Turkey’s upstream dams on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the country’s drought-prone conditions.

Fidan's last visit to the Iraqi capital was in January, where he met with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, and Hussain to discuss bilateral relations and current regional developments.

The meeting came a month after the Interior Ministers of both countries met and discussed details of a security agreement between Baghdad and Ankara on countering the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
