ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Zeravani Peshmerga Command on Sunday condemned an attack on the home of one of its members by a Sunni Arab lawmaker in Kirkuk the day prior, and asserted that the command will take legal measures against the parliament member.

Security guards of Mohaimen al-Hamdani, an MP of the Sunni Taqadum Party, on Saturday attacked the home of Ahmed Khalaf, a Zerevani Peshmerga residing in Kirkuk’s Dibis district, reportedly over a social media comment by Khalaf criticizing Hamdani.

“We at the Zeravani Peshmerga Command strongly condemn this inhumane act,” read the Zeravani statement, noting that, although Khalaf was not home at the time of the attack, Hamdani’s guards “opened fire on our Peshmerga's house and harmed his family.”

The command said that it will “take all necessary legal measures” against the Sunni lawmaker, holding Iraqi federal authorities responsible for the safety of every Peshmerga member and their families residing in areas within Baghdad’s jurisdiction.

The Zeravani also called on local authorities to take legal action against Hamdani, and “bring him to justice.”

Khalaf previously told The New Region that dozens of Hamdani’s guards had fired around 200 bullets at his house, causing significant material damage to the property, and terrorizing the Peshmerga fighter’s family.

“After the attack, they tried very hard to resolve the issue through tribal reconciliation, but I have filed a complaint and am waiting for the law,” he added. In addition to Khalaf, two security force officers were also attacked during their efforts to control the situation, and have reportedly filed complaints against the MP.

Iraq’s Security Media Cell announced on Sunday that seven of Hamdani’s guards who were involved in the altercation have been arrested and disarmed by Iraqi forces, adding that investigations into the incident continue.
