ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Sirens activated at the key Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province late Sunday after aerial activity was detected in the area, with security forces successfully shooting down a drone. The site has routinely come under attack by militia groups.
Citing field employees, The New Region’s correspondent reported that sirens sounded at the field in Sulaimani’s Chamchamal district as a drone was sighted hovering over.
A security source told The New Region early Sunday that a drone was shot down by security forces over the field, asserting that "the situation is returning to normal and there are no drones in the sky above Khor Mor.”
The New Region has reached out to Chamchamal’s district mayor but has yet to receive a response at the time of writing this article.

Located in Sulaimani’s Chamchamal district, Khor Mor is a major gas field in the Kurdistan Region that boasts significant economic and strategic importance. It is operated by Dana Gas, which, alongside affiliate Crescent Petroleum, agreed to a deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in 2007 to develop the Region’s gas capacities.
In mid-October, Dana Gas announced that it began commercial gas sales from a mega expansion project at Khor Mor, boosting capacity by 50 percent.
However, the field has repeatedly come under attack by Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups seeking to destabilize the Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas sector and to limit the Region’s gas production abilities.
Attacks on Khor Mor have frequently led to major power disruptions across the Kurdistan Region.
