The Kurdistan Regional Government confirmed that the Khor Mor site was targeted by a drone strike and that gas distribution to power stations has been temporarily suspended as a result.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The key Khor Mor gas field’s Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) section was attacked by a drone late Wednesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) confirmed, adding that gas distribution to power stations has been suspended as a result

“We inform the citizens of the Kurdistan Region that tonight at 11:30 PM, due to a drone attack on the Khor Mor field, all gas exports to power stations were halted,” the natural resources and electricity ministries said in a joint statement.

“Currently, teams from both the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Electricity, along with Dana Gas company, are on the ground to follow up on the consequences of the incident and normalize the situation,” it added.

This marks the second time the facility, located in Sulaimani province's Chamchamal district, has been targeted this week. On Monday, two drones were shot down by security forces in the vicinity of the field.

Eyewitnesses told The New Region's correspondent that they heard two drones targeting the LPG section.

A security source told The New Region that the attack was most likely “carried out with two suicide drones because the direction of the explosions was from two different directions, whereas if they had been missiles, the direction of the missiles would have been in one.”

Omed Ahmed, spokesperson for the KRG electricity ministry, told The New Region that the attack will temporarily reduce electricity generation by around 75 percent.

The Khor Mor field is one of the main producers of Kurdistan Region’s electricity with natural gas reserves around 1.8 trillion cubic feet. It is operated by Dana Gas, which, alongside affiliate Crescent Petroleum, agreed to a deal with the KRG in 2007 to develop the Region’s gas capacities.

In mid-October, Dana Gas announced that it began commercial gas sales from a mega expansion project at Khor Mor, boosting capacity by 50 percent.

However, the field has repeatedly come under attack by Iran-backed Iraqi militia groups seeking to destabilize the Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas sector and to limit the Region’s gas production abilities.

Attacks on Khor Mor have frequently led to major power disruptions across the Kurdistan Region.
