ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iranian consul to Erbil on Friday told The New Region that the recent attack on Sulaimani province’s Khor Mor gas field was “unacceptable”, regardless of who is behind the strike.
A strike targeted the key Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province late Wednesday. The UAE-based Dana Gas, the field’s operator, said the following day that the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) section was “struck by a rocket attack,” causing no injuries but shutting down production.
“We condemn the drone attack on the Khor Mor field,” said Iranian Consul General to Erbil Faramarz Asadi, noting that “this act is unacceptable regardless of who carried it out.”
“From our point of view, this action is actually an attack on the security of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the welfare of its dear people,” the diplomat added.
The attack was widely condemned regionally and by diplomatic missions, but neighboring Iran has yet to issue an official statement.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani promptly formed a high-level investigation committee, which visited the site on Friday.
Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, told state media that the committee will conclude its findings within 72 hours “after determining the causes of the incident and the parties responsible for it.”
Khor Mor has repeatedly come under attack by Iran-backed Iraqi armed factions seeking to destabilize the Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas sector and limit the Region’s gas production abilities.
The strike cut power supply across the Kurdistan Region by 80 percent and electricity production down to 1,000 MW from 4,000 MW.
The attack also disrupted power delivery to the provinces of Nineveh, Kirkuk, and Salahaddin.
