ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq on Friday strongly condemned the suicide bombing that killed dozens and injured over a hundred others at a mosque in Pakistan’s Islamabad.
Iraq “reiterates its categorical rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism targeting places of worship and innocent people, and emphasizes the importance of strengthening international cooperation to combat terrorism,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
A suicide bombing targeted a Shiite mosque in Islamabad during the weekly Friday prayer, killing at least 31 people and injuring 169 others, according to Pakistani officials.
“Targeting innocent citizens is a crime against humanity,” Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said, adding, “the nation stands with the affected families in this hour of difficulty.”
US Charge d’Affaires in Pakistan Natalie Baker offered condolences to the injured and the families of those killed in the attack, calling it “unacceptable.”
“The United States strongly condemns today’s terrorist attack in Islamabad that left innocent worshippers dead and injured. We condemn all acts of terror and violence, including this attack,” Baker said.
Iran and Turkey also condemned the attack with Tehran urging regional cooperation to combat “the sinister phenomenon of terrorism.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
The attack is the deadliest in Islamabad since the 2008 suicide bombing near the Marriott hotel which killed at least 60 people.
