"We have to make a deal, otherwise it is going to be very traumatic…I don’t want that to happen, but we have to make a deal. They should’ve made a deal the first time; they got [Operation] Midnight Hammer instead," US President Donald Trump told reporters.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he expects a nuclear deal with Iran to be worked out in the next month, warning that should they fail to do so the consequences would be “very traumatic.”

The president's comments come following the resumption of indirect talks between the two sides over the Iranian nuclear file in Oman earlier in the month, marking a resumption of a tentative process that was disrupted in June 2025 when Israel launched a full-fledged military campaign that eventually saw US participation.

When asked if there is a timeline for a deal with Tehran, Trump told reporters, “I guess over the next month, something like that. It should happen very quickly.”

“I will talk to the Iranians as long as I like. If we can't get a deal with them, we will go to phase two. Phase two will be very tough for them. I am not looking for that,” he warned.

“We have to make a deal, otherwise it is going to be very traumatic…I don’t want that to happen, but we have to make a deal. They should’ve made a deal the first time; they got [Operation] Midnight Hammer instead,” Trump told reporters.

Operation Midnight Hammer refers to the US military action at the tail-end of the June 2025 conflict, during which American B-2 bombers targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting a retaliatory attack on a US military base in Qatar.

Trump on Wednesday received Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where the two discussed the ongoing talks with Iran. During the meeting, Trump insisted to the Israeli premier that he will continue negotiations, he said afterward on Truth Social.

Iran has repeatedly asserted that the Netanyahu government seeks to draw the Trump administration into a war with their country, often tailoring statements and social media posts to express a willingness to negotiate with the US while lambasting Israeli influence over Washington.

“I believe that the conditions he is creating, combined with the fact that they certainly understand they made a mistake the last time by not reaching an agreement, may create the conditions for achieving a good agreement,” Netanyahu said on Thursday, though caveating that he informed the US president of his “general skepticism regarding the quality of any agreement with Iran.”

On one hand, US military personnel and vehicles have amassed in the Gulf with the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying strike group in range of Iran for a possible attack, on the other, Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi both hailed the first round of talks in Oman as positive, with the prospect of an agreement that calms tensions being reached hanging in the balance.
