ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The United States' army has struck nearly 2,000 targets across Iran in just over four days of Operation Epic Fury, US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Brad Cooper said early Wednesday.
“We're less than 100 hours into this operation and we've already struck nearly 2,000 targets with more than 2,000 munitions,” the American admiral said in a video update four days into the US-Israeli war on Iran, which has already killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several top officials, and over 1,000 others across the country.
Cooper said that “more than 50,000 troops, 200 fighters, two aircraft carriers and bombers from the United States are participating in this operation,” adding that more reinforcements are on the way, in what he called "the largest buildup by the US in the Middle East in a generation.”
The US-Israeli joint offensive on Iran, codenamed Operation Epic Fury by the Americans, started on Saturday morning with a series of simultaneous strikes on key Iranian targets by the two armies.
The American commander said that the first 24 hours of the operation were “nearly double the scale” in comparison to the US strikes on Iraq more than two decades ago.
He added that 17 Iranian ships have been destroyed, including the Islamic republic's “most operational” submarine, “that now has a hole in its side.”
The US-Israeli attacks have prompted a retaliatory campaign from Iran that has spanned much of the Middle East, with several US allies in the Gulf having been caught in the crossfire.
“Now, in retaliation, the Iranian regime has launched over 500 ballistic missiles and over 2,000 drones. To be clear, Iran is indiscriminately targeting civilians as they launch these missiles and drones,” Cooper claimed.
Iran has targeted US embassies, military bases, hotels, oil facilities, and various US interests, with strikes carried out in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.
