ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Erbil has been targeted by 17 drone strikes in a renewed wave of attacks since late Wednesday, all of which were intercepted, Governor Omed Khoshnaw said, with pro-Iran militias in Iraq claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.
“Seventeen drone strikes were carried out over Erbil province in the past 24 hours, resulting in no casualties and limited damage to a few locations,” Khoshnaw told The New Region on Thursday.
Several locations in the Kurdistan Region, including Erbil province, have been targeted by drone attacks since late Wednesday, including Harir airbase, Erbil International Airport, and neighborhoods around the US Consulate, with the drones being intercepted before reaching the ground.
"All attacks were carried out via drones, and all attacks have been intercepted," Khoshnaw said.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said a new wave of attacks targeting US bases in the region was carried out “jointly” with the “Islamic Resistance,” a coalition of pro-Iran militias in Iraq, according to the IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency.
Islamic Resistance in Iraq later claimed responsibility, saying they had “carried out thirteen operations using drones against enemy bases in Iraq and the region,” read a statement by the group.
Footage received by The New Region late Wednesday showed remnants of an intercepted missile in a densely populated central area of Erbil, with damage to several buildings.
In another part of the city, footage showed a house that was almost completely destroyed.
Since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have been repeatedly targeted by Iranian missile and drone strikes, with US military bases and diplomatic facilities proving attractive targets for both Tehran and pro-Iran militias operating in the country.
The KRG has repeatedly called on Baghdad to rein in the activities of pro-Iran militias that have been targeting the Region with strikes, holding Baghdad responsible for stopping the attacks.
On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, telling him that Iranian strikes on Iraqi territory are "unacceptable" and Iraq will not be used as a "launching pad" for attacks on its neighbor.
