ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Italy’s defense ministry said on Thursday that a missile struck its base in the Kurdistan Region’s capital of Erbil, causing no casualties.
"A missile struck our base in Erbil. There are no casualties or injuries among the Italian personnel. They are all well. I am being constantly updated by the Chief of Defense Staff and the Commander of COVI," Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said in a statement posted by the ministry on Thursday.
Italy’s Joint Operations Headquarters (COVI), the top operational command of the Italian military, oversees its contingent in Erbil, which is part of the international coalition against ISIS and trains Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
Italy has 300 troops stationed in Erbil as part of the US-led coalition against ISIS to train Kurdish Peshmerga forces, according to the defense ministry.
Since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have been repeatedly targeted by Iranian missile and drone strikes, with US military bases and diplomatic facilities proving attractive targets for both Tehran and pro-Iran militias operating in the country.
"I firmly condemn the attack that was carried out against the Italian base in Erbil,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on X on Thursday.
Tajani reaffirmed that all Italian personnel are “safe and secure,” while expressing appreciation for their service.
Italy has been a member of the US-led coalition against ISIS since 2014.
The United Arab Emirates Consulate General compound in Erbil was also targeted in a round of drone attacks late Monday, with the UAE condemning the strikes and calling on both the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to investigate.
Groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella of pro-Iran factions within Iraq, have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks on Erbil.
The Kurdistan Region leaders have warned Baghdad of the dire consequences, and have called on the Iraqi government to contain the threats, warning that if Baghdad does not take action, Erbil will.
