The previous attack on the Emirati consulate was widely condemned by several regional countries and actors, including top officials from the Kurdistan Region.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday condemned an attack on its consulate in Erbil, the second within a week, which left at least two staff members wounded.

The Emirati foreign ministry “strongly condemned and denounced the unprovoked terrorist drone attack” in a statement, adding that at least two security personnel were wounded.

The Emirati mission was also targeted late Monday, as a spate of drones attacked the Kurdish capital of Erbil. The previous aggression led to no casualties.

The foreign ministry stressed that attacking diplomatic missions is “a flagrant violation of international norms and law, particularly the Vienna Convention,” and called on the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to probe the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) denounced the attack shortly after the Emirati statement, calling the “terrorist” attack “a blatant violation of international law, and the sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” in a statement.

The KRG called on the Iraqi government to “practice its legal responsibilities, and put a limit for the outlawed forces, groups, and militias that pose a threat to the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq through their aggression and unjustified attacks.”

The previous attack on the Emirati consulate was widely condemned by several regional countries and actors, including top officials from the Kurdistan Region.

Groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella of pro-Iran factions within Iraq, have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks on Erbil. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have also targeted Erbil during the conflict.

Many factions within the IRI have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

Kurdistan Region leaders have warned Baghdad of the dire consequences, and have called on the Iraqi government to contain the threats, warning that if Baghdad does not take action, Erbil will.

The UAE defense ministry on Saturday said that its air defenses have engaged “294 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,600 UAVs launched from Iran,” since the onset of “the blatant Iranian aggression.”
