ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq’s justice ministry on Saturday warned that strikes near Baghdad International Airport are raising concerns about a potential breakout from a nearby high-security prison which houses “highly dangerous” inmates.
Baghdad International Airport, which houses the Camp Victory base, an American diplomatic facility, has been repeatedly targeted by drone strikes since the outbreak of the US and Israeli war on Iran.
Iraqi justice ministry spokesperson Ahmed Laibi said the most severe strikes were six on Saturday, some of which landed very close to the al-Karkh Central Prison, which houses Islamic State (ISIS) suspects and convicted terrorists.
The attacks have raised “concerns about the potential impact on the security of the prison, which houses highly dangerous terrorist inmates,” Laibi warned.
In late January, a US-backed operation began to transfer some 5,700 ISIS prisoners from Syria to Iraq. Thousands of the prisoners are being held at the Karkh facility, ahead of their trails.
“The fall of projectiles near the prison site is a cause for concern regarding their impact on our precautionary measures and security plans for protecting the prison, or causing damage to the prison's infrastructure,” he said.
Saraya Awliya al-Dam, a pro-Iran Iraqi militia and part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, has claimed responsibility for previous attacks on the airport. The militia has targeted US interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since the war began.
Kurdistan Region authorities have repeatedly called on Baghdad to rein in the pro-Iran militias and hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.
During a meeting on Saturday, Iraq’s ruling Coordination Framework and top figures from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) “reiterated their rejection of targeting the country's vital installations and diplomatic missions, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the security institutions' measures to protect those missions and their headquarters, and pursuing those who target them and put their security at risk.”
They also condemned the recent attacks on PMF bases, as the US has responded to the strikes by targeting Iran-aligned groups, which include many factions that are incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the PMF.
The PMF on Thursday said they have been targeted by at least 32 airstrikes since the war began, leading to the deaths of 27 fighters and the injury of at least 50 others.
Iran has retaliated to the war launched by the US and Israel, and the conflict has spilled over into regional countries. Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the Gulf have regularly been targeted by strikes from Iran and pro-Iran militias, under the pretext of housing US bases and interests.
