ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least five people were injured on Sunday following missile attacks on Baghdad airport and its surroundings, including a nearby high-security prison housing thousands of Islamic State (ISIS) prisoners, raising concerns over a potential security breach.

The airport and its vicinity were targeted by five missiles, resulting in the injury of four staff members and an engineer, head of the Security Media Cell Saad Maan revealed in a statement.

Baghdad International Airport, which houses the Camp Victory base, an American diplomatic facility, has been repeatedly targeted by drone strikes since the outbreak of the US and Israeli war on Iran.

The sites impacted in the attack included the Al-Karkh Central Prison in Baghdad, where 5,700 ISIS prisoners were recently transferred from Syria as part of a deal with Washington, following security breaches in ISIS detention facilities.

A similar attack took place on Saturday, with some of the projectiles landing very close to the prison, according to Iraqi justice ministry spokesperson Ahmed Laibi.

Iraq’s National Security Advisory on Sunday warned against the recurrence of attacks near Baghdad airport, as they impose a “direct” threat to the high security prison.

The advisory called on relevant authorities to take “decisive and immediate measures” to prevent similar attacks, “given the grave risks they pose to the security of the prison and the surrounding area.”

Security forces on Sunday discovered the launching platform for the missiles, hidden inside a wheel in the Al-Rasheediya area west of the capital, Maan said.

Pro-Iran Iraqi militias in Iraq, mainly those operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), have claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on several sites in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Many factions within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

In return, joint US-Israeli airstrikes have repeatedly targeted PMF positions in Iraq amid the ongoing war with Iran, with dozens of casualties among their ranks.
