Iran has begun targeting energy infrastructure in Gulf countries in retaliation for strikes on its own key energy sites amid the conflict with the US and Israel.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq’s foreign ministry on Thursday warned that recent attacks targeting energy facilities in several neighboring and regional countries represent a “concerning escalation” that could undermine efforts to reduce tensions and threaten broader stability.

The statement comes after Iranian strikes on energy infrastructure in multiple Gulf states on Wednesday night, which came in retaliation for an attack on Iran's South Pars gas field amid the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that the targeting of energy facilities in a number of Iraq’s neighboring countries and sister countries in the region during the recent period is a worrying escalation that would harm efforts to reduce tension and undermine stability efforts," the statement read.

It continued to say that the incidents risk disrupting attempts to contain the ongoing crisis and could impact the stability of global energy supplies, stressing the need to ensure the continued flow of oil and gas to international markets.

The ministry urged increased efforts to contain the escalation and prevent further deterioration, emphasizing that continued tensions would not serve any party and could deepen existing crises while expanding the scope of conflict.

Baghdad also urged the activation of international and regional mechanisms to address what it described as shared challenges, while reiterating the importance of de-escalation and cooperation to safeguard common interests.

A day earlier, Iraq strongly condemned an attack on energy facilities at Iran’s South Pars gas field, describing it as a dangerous escalation and a clear violation of international law.

The Foreign Ministry warned that targeting critical infrastructure, especially energy sites, could heighten regional tensions, endanger civilians, and negatively affect global energy markets, while reaffirming Iraq’s call to respect state sovereignty and protect vital installations.

Regional foreign ministers meeting in Riyadh on Thursday condemned Iran’s attacks on energy infrastructure and called for an immediate halt to the escalation, warning of their right to defend themselves.

The joint statement, issued by Gulf and regional countries, denounced strikes on oil facilities, LNG sites, desalination plants, and airports as unjustifiable and dangerous.

The call followed Iranian retaliatory attacks targeting key energy sites across the region, including LNG facilities in Qatar and infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

QatarEnergy said missile strikes caused large fires and extensive damage at its facilities, while Saudi authorities reported intercepting drones aimed at a gas site.

Officials warned that continued attacks on critical energy infrastructure risk destabilizing regional security and disrupting global energy markets.
