ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Wednesday that Iran has told them that a ballistic missile strike on Peshmerga forces in Erbil province the day prior that killed six was a “mistake,” promising to investigate the matter.
An Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Peshmerga's bases in Erbil province’s Soran administration early Tuesday killed six Peshmerga and injured 30 others, the Peshmerga ministry announced.
Speaking to reporters, Barzani said they had contacted Tehran as soon as the incident occurred and were told by the Iranian side that “a mistake has occurred,” with a promise to “investigate the matter.”
“They also extended their apologies and condolences to the Kurdistan Region,” Barzani added.
The Kurdish leader asserted that they are now awaiting the Islamic Republic’s response regarding the outcome of the investigations.
“The Kurdistan Region has a clear policy – we are a factor of peace and stability in the region,” he stated.
The Peshmerga ministry wrote in a statement that a force of the 5th Infantry Division of the Peshmerga forces in Soran and the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Division of Area Command 1 “were subjected to an attack by six Iranian ballistic missiles.”
Kurdish authorities issued strong-worded condemnations against the attack on Tuesday, calling on the Iraqi government to ensure the prevention of such attacks.
The development is a part of a broader regional conflict that was launched late February with joint US-Israeli strikes targeting Iranian territory, which prompted retaliatory Iranian attacks on US interests across the Region.
The Kurdistan Region has been subject to numerous drone and missile attacks since the start of the conflict, with the strikes targeting US Diplomatic missions and military presence, as well as residential neighborhoods and hotels.
Earlier in March, two Peshmerga bases in Erbil and Sulaimani were subjected to drone attacks that resulted in the injury of at least three fighters.
