ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Israel struck Iran’s key South Pars natural gas field on Monday, marking the second strike in a month on the site, despite US President Donald Trump reassuring in March that the vital energy facility would not be targeted again.
The South Pars energy complex said in a statement that some of the some supporting petrochemical facilities were targeted on Monday afternoon, noting that relevant teams were subsequently dispatched at the scene and no casualties were reported.
“The situation is under control as of the time of this statement, and the technical dimensions and extent of the damage are being investigated,” it said.
The Israeli defense minister confirmed that their military had targeted Iran’s largest petrochemical complex in Asaluyeh, which serves as the primary processing hub for the giant South Pars field
The army “just carried out a powerful strike on Iran's largest petrochemical facility, located in Asaluyeh – a central target responsible for about 50 percent of the country's petrochemical production,” Katz said in a video statement.
The key gas field came under a similar attack by the Israeli Air Force earlier in March, which led to retaliatory Iranian strikes on Qatar’s massive Ras Laffan refinery, which is responsible for the production of about 20 percent of global supply of liquified natural gas (LNG).
The escalation in March led Donald Trump to vow that “NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field,” and highlighted US and Qatar’s non-involvement in the attack, warning however that the US will destroy the vital field should Iran attack “innocent” targets, such as Qatar.
The Israeli forces were told to “continue striking with full force the national infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime,” Katz said in his statement.
The Pars Special Economic Energy Zone is part of the world’s largest concentrations of gas and petrochemical facilities shared with Qatar, and sits on Iran’s Gulf coast in Bushehr province.
A similar attack was carried out on Saturday when an Israeli airstrike targeted the Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Zone, an Iranian petrochemicals hub southwest of the country, the ISNA news agency reported, citing an Iranian official, noting that five individuals were killed as a result.
The two facilities, “which together are responsible for about 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports, have been taken out of use and are not functioning,” the Israeli minister noted.
The developments come amid reports of a potential 45-day ceasefire currently being discussed by Iranian, US, and Israeli mediators that could pave way for a permanent end to the war, according to Axios, citing several sources.
