ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said Tuesday that Baghdad “knows very well” who the parties involved in the recent attacks on the Kurdistan Region are, but has failed to confront them, while reaffirming that grievances have been sent to Iran.
An overnight drone strike hit the Darashakran subdistrict north of Erbil on Monday, striking a civilian home and killing a married couple, Musa Rasul and his wife, Mujda Hassan, and leaving their two children orphaned.
Masrour Barzani said that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have delivered their grievances to Iran over the attacks, stressing that there is no “justification or reasoning” for the ongoing strikes, he said on Tuesday speaking to the reporters.
Barzani further stressed that the Iraqi government “knows very well” who the parties behind the attacks on the Kurdistan Region are, yet Baghdad “has not taken any practical steps” to stop the attacks.
“They roam freely, and they are being funded and authorized by the government, but the government says we are unable to confront them. Whether they don’t want or they don’t have the power to, the responsibility still lies with the federal government,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday the Kurdish premier slammed the attack as a “war crime” saying the repeated attacks on the Kurdistan Region are carried out on “baseless pretexts.”
Erbil has been struck by over 500 missiles and drones since the onset of the Iran war, resulting in at least 16 dead, dozens injured, and heavy material damage, Khoshnaw said on Thursday.
Kurdish authorities have continuously condemned the attacks launched by Iran and pro-Iran militias against the Region, while calling on Baghdad to control the “outlaw groups” and prevent the recurrence of strikes.
The prime minister reaffirmed that the KRG will do “everything it can” to compensate those who have suffered material damage as a result of the attacks.
