ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran’s army on Monday said “no port in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman will be safe” if its own ports are targeted, following a US announcement of imposing a blockade on ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.
The threat comes shortly after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and President Donald Trump said they will begin enforcing a blockade on ships entering or leaving Iranian ports on April 13.
“If the security of the ports of the Islamic Republic of Iran is threatened, no port in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman will be safe,” the Iranian Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquartes said.
Trump said Sunday the United States will begin blockading ships in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear program after Pakistani-mediated talks in Islamabad failed to reach an agreement.
The Iranian army said no “enemy-affiliated vessels” will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, while others may be allowed passage “ in compliance with the regulations of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
“After the war ends, the Islamic Republic of Iran will decisively implement a permanent mechanism to control the Strait of Hormuz,” it added.
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key waterway responsible for roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil, as a means in its war against the US and Israel, sharply driving up global oil prices.
Trump accused Iran of threatening shipping and imposing “illegal tolls,” saying vessels that comply with Tehran’s demands would be targeted, while warning that any attack by Iranian forces would trigger a strong military response.
The US’ blockade announcement followed nearly a full day of negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Islamabad that ended without a deal, with disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, war reparations, and control of the waterway.
