ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran on Sunday executed a Baluchi man accused of attacks on security forces and being a member of the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl, the judiciary said, the latest in a spate of hangings by the Islamic republic.
Amer Ramesh was arrested in an October 2024 large-scale raid in the Pirsahrab area of Chabahar in Sistan-Baluchestan province, the Judiciary’s Mizan Online website said. His arrest and sentence dates were not disclosed.
“The execution sentence of Amer Ramesh was carried out early this morning,” Mizan said, accusing him of “armed rebellion through bomb attacks and ambushes targeting military forces.”
He was further accused of being a member of Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group operating in Iran’s restive Sistan-Baluchistan province in the southeast and the Pakistan border region. It is designated a terrorist group by Iran and the US.
Iran recorded its highest number of executions in more than 15 years in 2025, according to Amnesty International. Many of the cases involved allegations of espionage, national security charges, and alleged ties to Israel or the US.
On Saturday, another man from Isfahan was executed after he was convicted of carrying out intelligence missions for Israel inside the country and setting fire to public property during nationwide protests in January, state media reported.
The execution came days after a man was hanged on charges of being a member of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK), an Iranian opposition group, and espionage for Israel.
Iran has a long history of broadcasting alleged confessions from detainees that are widely believed to be coerced, often obtained through threats, psychological pressure, and, in some cases, physical torture, and commonly described as “forced confessions.”
During the January nationwide protests, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that more than 240 forced confessions were broadcast in the aftermath of the crackdown.
In Ramesh’s case, the Baluchi Haalvsh human rights monitor said the 18-year-old's trial was unfair, and his confession video showed “signs of injuries and bruising were visible on his face, which sources say are indications of pressure and torture during his detention.”
The Sistan-Baluchistan province is among Iran’s most deprived areas and the minorities are disproportionately targeted by security forces.
