ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US President Donald Trump on Thursday asserted that Washington has “far more” ammunition than it could use in a war with Iran, pushing back against reports that the US is running low on munitions as the conflict drags on unabated.

Addressing the reports, the president said that the US has “virtually unlimited amounts of Mid to High Grade Ammunition, far more than we could ever use for this, or for any other War (which is highly unlikely!), that could improbably take place,” in a post on Truth Social.

“In addition, we are producing Munitions at levels never seen before. We are stockpiling and preparing for any contingency that could happen,” he added, noting that weapon sales to allied states are to resume soon.

Trump’s remarks come amid reports that the US has depleted significant amounts of its weapons stocks during its ongoing military confrontation with Iran.

A Reuters report released early August, claimed that the US has used up “much of its global stockpile of highly accurate long-range missiles” during its months-long military confrontation, citing three sources “familiar with the data.”

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think thank, pointed out in a July report that the US has used around one-third of its initial inventories of a number of key long-range munitions in the war.

The Center also said the US was already facing shortages of some key munitions before the Iran war, with existing stockpiles considered insufficient for a potential major conflict with an adversary such as China.

In addition to the strains on offensive capabilities, the air defense requirements for US bases located across the Middle East have been tested by recurrent Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes, with the cutting-edge Patriot interceptors having been relied on heavily for such a purpose.

According to CSIS, the US entered the war with a stockpile of some 2,300 Patriot systems, with roughly 1,500 having been used up as of July. The production of the costly air defense system cannot match the pace of usage during high-intensity conflict, according to reports from US outlets such as The Washington Post, resulting in supplies to Ukraine and US bases in Europe having been curtailed.

The conflict with Tehran escalated again after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Tuesday evening targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites in Iran, following “recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members.”

Iran in turn responded by bombing US installations across the region, including strikes on the Kurdistan Region, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

The recent escalation comes as little progress has been made in bringing the war to a conclusive halt.
