As the US reinforces its support to Israel’s defense, the Iran-backed resistance in Iraq has vowed to retaliate if the US was to strike Iraqi territory or even use its airspace to target Iran.

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance in an early Monday statement warned of retaliation in the case of a US attack on their forces in Iraq or if Iraqi airspace is used to target Iran.

In a strong worded statement, the Iraqi Resistance said that they are “not bound by any restrictions” if the US strikes their members in Iraq “or exploit its airspace to carry out attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

“Then our response will hold no limitations,” the statement read.

The statement comes at a time of incredible fragility in the region. Iran has kept Israel, US, and the region waiting for an attack on Israel since the assassination of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.

Iran-backed paramilitary groups like Lebanese Hezbollah have already launched several rounds of strikes on Israel, however an attack from Tehran is yet to be seen, though widely anticipated.

This comes as US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke to his Israeli counterpart on Sunday, and reiterated the US commitment to defending Israel.

Austin “noted the strengthening of U.S. military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East in light of escalating regional tensions,” according to the readout of the call published by the Department of Defense.

“Reinforcing this commitment, Secretary Austin has ordered the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group, equipped with F-35C fighters, to accelerate its transit to the Central Command area of responsibility, adding to the capabilities already provided by the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT Carrier Strike Group,” the readout added.

Austin has further ordered the USS Georgia (SSGN 729) guided missile submarine to the Middle East.

Speaking to The New Region last week, an Iraqi paramilitary commander said that they are committed to tit-for-tat attacks with the US, if they continue to target Iraqi forces.

“The current situation with the Americans is a blow for a blow,” the commander said. “Whenever they strike, we will strike.”
