Iraq’s long-awaited population and housing census begins Wednesday, with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani highlighting its role in planning and governance. Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr called for transparency and urged citizens to provide accurate data. The census is expected to guide Iraq’s future development efforts.

DUBAI, UAE - Iraq is set to conduct its long-awaited general population and housing census this Wednesday and Thursday, marking a significant step toward improved governance and planning. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and powerful Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr addressed the nation Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of transparency and cooperation in this nationwide effort.

Sudani: A pivotal step for Iraq’s development

Prime Minister Sudani described the census as a “long-overdue civilizational and developmental step” that will provide accurate data to shape the country’s future.

“Tomorrow, we take an important step by conducting the general population and housing census, delayed for many years,” Sudani said, highlighting the government’s commitment to completing this process as part of its priorities.

Sudani underscored the adoption of modern, electronic methods to ensure accuracy, stating, “We have employed the best technological tools to deliver precise results, serving the present and future needs of Iraqis.”

He emphasized that the census will establish a robust database to aid state institutions and better target services to vulnerable populations. “This is not just about accumulating numbers—it is the dividing line between speculation and facts and a decisive tool for making vital and effective decisions.”

The prime minister urged citizens to cooperate with census teams and provide accurate information while adhering to the curfew in place. He assured the public that the census is unrelated to taxation or social protection issues, calling it “a cornerstone for development and progress.”

Sudani extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Planning, the Statistics and Information Systems Authority, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their preparation efforts. He also acknowledged the security forces for creating a stable environment during the census period.

“We trust your love for Iraq and your dedication to advancing our country toward a bright future that all Iraqis can take pride in,” he concluded.

Sadr calls for transparency and justice

Sadr, leader of the National Shiite Movement (previously Sadrist Movement), also addressed the census, calling on the government to ensure its integrity and transparency.

“The Iraqi government must ensure a transparent and impartial census, free from external or partisan interference,” read the statement from Sadr.

He also urged the public to provide accurate data, warning of potential attempts to manipulate the results.

“The people must provide accurate statistics to show the facts in their correct and precise manner, as there are those who want to falsify them,” Sadr added.

The upcoming census is Iraq’s first since 1997 and will include the provinces of the Kurdistan Region.

A nationwide curfew during the general census will be imposed across all the provinces, starting from Wednesday 12:00 am until Friday 12:00 am.

Preliminary results of the census are set to be announced within six weeks.

Unofficial figures put Iraq’s population at over 45 million.

Iraq had initially planned to conduct a population census in 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus.
