“In the interest of all the people of Iraq and Kurdistan, and in consideration of this grave situation, we have exercised restraint; however, if the federal government continues in this position of inaction, we will be compelled to adopt a different stance,” the Peshmerga ministry warned.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga ministry on Monday warned that if Baghdad fails to take action against “terrorist groups” targeting the Kurdistan Region with drone and missile attacks, it will be “compelled to adopt a different stance” from the current restraint.

The statement comes after Peshmerga positions were once again targeted by four drones the previous night.

“These successive attacks are being carried out openly and in plain sight of the Iraqi army and security forces against the Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga bases, causing significant casualties and material damage,” the Peshmerga ministry said.

Baghdad has taken “no serious position to prevent these destructive terrorist attacks,” it added.

The Kurdistan Region has been targeted by hundreds of missile and drone attacks since the US-Israel war with Iran started in late February.

In March, at least six Peshmerga were killed and 30 others injured in an Iranian ballistic missile attack on the forces’ bases in Erbil province’s Soran administration. Iran said the strike was a mistake and promised to launch a probe.

“In the interest of all the people of Iraq and Kurdistan, and in consideration of this grave situation, we have exercised restraint; however, if the federal government continues in this position of inaction, we will be compelled to adopt a different stance,” it warned.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of pro-Iran Iraqi militias linked to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks on Erbil.

Kurdish authorities have continuously condemned the attacks launched by the Iraqi militias on the Region, while calling on Baghdad to control the “outlaw groups” and prevent the recurrence of strikes.

The attacks on the Kurdistan Region have resulted in at least 14 deaths and 93 injuries, according to data obtained by Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) late last month.

According to CPT data, the attacks on the Kurdistan Region were mainly carried out using drones, accounting for 359 incidents, while missiles made up 104 of the strikes.

The majority of the attacks targeted Erbil province, which recorded 370 strikes. Sulaimani followed with 90, Duhok with 11, and Halabja recorded the fewest at three.
